PRODUCT: LNLA X MEINDL

Highlighting current items in the latest LNLA capsule, we go to the source, documenting how the quality, fit and craftsmanship has delivered a basic wardrobe staple that will evolve into a heirloom piece.

HANDMADE LEATHER JACKET / KIRCHANSCHÖRING / GERMANY

At the very tip of our collaboration spear is the limited edition LNLA X MEINDL leather jacket, partnering with a 336-year-old German fashion house to deliver our most premium product to date. Fabricated to be tough and functional — while being versatile — to allow the user to move seamlessly from office to bike, and into the night.

We visited the factory in Kirchanschöring (within Bavaria, south-eastern Germany) to document the handcrafted process. Founded in 1683 by Petrus Meindl, the fashion and footwear manufacturing company — the 16th oldest in Germany — produces boots for the British and French military and leather goods for BMW Motorrad.

Led by 11th-generation owner of the fashion house and motorcycling enthusiast Markus Meindl, [read his profile here] and assisted by Isabella Abele (design) and their team, below is a photo essay of how 100% kangaroo leather transforms into luxury apparel.

The jacket progresses through multiple stages from its inception as an idea, to a sketch and onto production via several adjustments and enhancements. Opting for hand over machine wherever possible and allowing the eventual purchaser the knowledge that their jacket has been crafted with care, while respecting the environment. Meindl chooses suppliers very carefully and have been working with the same partners for decades, particularly with tanneries which comply with strict environmental standards.

“Our products stand for incorporated sustainability, that you and future generations will enjoy,” says Meindl. “In our fast-moving times, there aren’t many products which convey these values. Therefore it is our wish to share our passion for leather and this unique product with you.”
